Torrevieja - "old tower"
Before the town's development in the early 19th century, there was merely a guard tower in its place. The town was therefore aptly named "torre vieja" - "old tower". The original guard tower no longer exists but the name of the town remains.
Things to do in Torrevieja
Enjoy the beachlife
One of the main attractions of Torrevieja is its coastline, which features over 20 kilometres of beaches and coves with crystal-clear waters. The most popular beaches in the area include La Mata, El Cura, and Los Locos, which offer a large range of water sports activities, beach bars and restaurants.
See the salt lakes
For a long time, the town's main industries were salt mining and fishing. The salt lakes (las salinas) are beautiful - one is pink and one is green in colour. You can get there by bike from Torrevieja. A well-signposted path, which is ideal for cycling or walking, leads from the salt museum in Torrevieja all the way to the salt lakes.
Visit a submarine
In Torrevieja harbour, you can pay a visit to the Delfin S-61, a real submarine. It was taken into service in 1973 and was able to reach a maximum depth of 300 metres. It was decommissioned in 2003 and has since been turned into a museum.
Splash around in Aquopolis Water Park
This can be found in the centre of Torrevieja and offers a wide range of water-based attractions for young and old. The Aquopolis is only open during the summer season.
Admire the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepcion
This neoclassical church was built in the late 18th century, to replace the previous church that had been destroyed by an earthquake. Some of the stones used to build this church stem from the old guard tower, that gave the town its name.
