Cala Ratjada - the lowdown
The resort of Cala Ratjada is situated around 3 kilometres from the historic town of Capdepera. It forms the most easterly part of the island and is the nearest point between Mallorca and its neighbouring island of Menorca. On a clear day, you can see the former Menorcan capital Ciutadella from here.
Cala Ratjada has a scenic rocky coastline and several great beaches within walking distance. The best known of these is Son Moll, which offers fine white sand and turquoise waters. This beach gets busy in the summer. Parking is hard to find but a bus stop is very close by.
If Son Moll is too busy, there are other options. Slightly further to the north, you will find the small and charming beach of Cala Gat, accessed via a beautiful promenade. Alternatively, there is the blue flag beach in the adjacent resort of Cala Agulla, which is amongst Mallorca's top 20 beaches.
Cala Ratjada features the largest port in the north of Mallorca. Apart from an abundance of traditional fishing boats, you will also find impressive yachts and sailing boats. You might enjoy one of the great boat trips that are on offer here!
On a Saturday morning, it is worth checking out the local traditional street market that is held at Placa del Pins. Here, you can get a selection of locally produced fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as flowers, arts and crafts, or clothing. If you have missed the local market, there is also one in nearby Capdepera that takes place on a Wednesday morning.
For a bit of "everyday holiday browsing", have a look around the Carrer L'Agulla Elinor Servera, Cala Ratjada's main shopping mile.
If you fancy a little hike, why not take a trip to the Far de Capdepera, a 19th-century beautiful working lighthouse, around 30 minutes walk from the centre of Cala Ratjada. The views from there are breathtaking at any time of the day, but even more so around sunrise and sunset.
