The city of Girona, with a population of around 100,000 inhabitants, lies in the north of Catalonia, roughly 100 kilometres northeast of Barcelona. Girona is the capital of the Spanish province with the same name. The city is popular with tourists, not least because of its abundance of beautiful medieval buildings and cobbled streets. Here are some of its highlights:
- Girona Cathedral, a Roman Catholic cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona. Consecrated in the year 1038, its construction spanned several centuries. The 90 wide stone steps leading up to the main entrance give the cathedral an even more imposing appearance.
- The incredibly well-preserved Jewish quarter does not appear to have changed much over the last 500 years. A walk around its narrow, cobbled lanes while admiring the medieval architecture all around you, makes you feel as if you have travelled back in time.
- The medieval walls: These old fortifications, which span the Eastern border of the old town, used to protect the city of Girona from invaders for hundreds of years. Nowadays, it is possible to take a walk on these ancient walls; from here you can admire the stunning views over the city and its surrounding area.
- A walk across the Onyar River on the Eiffel Bridge, also known as Pont de les Peixateries Velles. This is probably Girona's most famous bridge, which was designed by Gustave Eiffel, just before the building of the Eiffel Tower.
And did you know...
...that Girona features in Game of Thrones? The city's old town, with its beautiful medieval buildings, cobbled streets, and quirky little lanes offers the perfect backdrop for this fantasy drama TV series and was therefore used as one of the main filming locations for part of season 6.
